Super Smash Bros. Ultimate may be launching this month, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything else worthwhile releasing. Those unable to snag a copy of the popular fighting game can look forward to a slew of quality titles, albeit lesser known. The below list of indie releases are just a few that can be downloaded from the Nintendo Switch eShop this month.

December 2018 Indie Spotlight

Guacamelee! 2

A sequel to 2013’s Guacamelee!this Metroidvania platformer has players take control of Luchador Juan Aguacate. Inspired by Mexican folklore and culture, gamers are able to explore a large world with a plethora of unique friends and foes alike. This second installment includes a new upgrade system, four player local co-op, new enemies as well as double the amount of them. In addition to these, the game utilizes a new engine to allow for better graphics. Guacamelee! 2 by DrinkBox Studios is available now for $19.99.

Donut County

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a hole in the ground? Well, developer, Ben Esposito makes that dream a reality with Donut CountyTake control of a large hole that grows as it swallows more items which helps to solve puzzles. This story-based physics platformer has plenty to be discovered and has been critically acclaimed, garnering two nominations at The Game Awards for Best Debut Indie Game and Best Mobile Game. Esposito was also a designer for both What Remains of Edith Finch and The Unfinished Swan. Donut County is available now for $12.99.

Revenge of the Bird King

Mighty Rabbit Studios has created a retro-inspired action-RPG platformer with Revenge of the Bird King. Limited Run Games is set to publish this title digitally for Switch owners. Secret treasures, leveling up, and exploration can all be done through the eyes of the Bird King. Stop a group of intergalactic superheroes as they bring havoc and mystery to your planet. No physical edition has been announced or hinted at. The game will be available on the eShop, December 27 for $4.99.

Knights of Pen and Paper 2: Deluxiest Edition

Fans of Dungeons and Dragons may find themselves right at home with Knights of Pen and Paper 2: Deluxiest Edition. The game is told through the eyes of the Game Master as he crafts the world and adventure around you. Create a unique character, enjoy geeky contemporary jokes, or even punch a panda. Its Deluxiest Edition includes new bonus items and expansions. A physical release has also been planned by European publisher, Super Rare Games. Seaven Studios’ turn-based RPG is available now for $12.99.

Kingdom Two Crowns

The award-winning Kingdom series sees its next installment with Kingdom Two Crowns. This sequel reintroduces the familiar micro-strategy gameplay that fans have grown accustomed to. However, there is a new campaign mode that brings all new units and secrets to uncover. Exclusively to this version of the game is a local cooperative play mode where players can drop in and out simultaneously. Raw Fury’s Kingdom Two Crowns is available now for $19.99.

The Nintendo eShop continues to provide excellent experiences in addition to major first-party releases. December is another month without an exception to this. All of these games are worthy titles that should not be overlooked. The best part of these is that they are all under $20 making them perfect pickups for this holiday season.
