Nintendo released their sales numbers with their latest financial report, and the Nintendo Switch Lite has almost outsold the Wii U in approximately one year after release. The Switch Lite’s sales numbers are through December 31. The Switch Lite has sold 13.53 units worldwide, while the Nintendo Wii U only achieved 13.56 million units sold worldwide during its entire lifespan. This is beyond impressive. Considering the numbers only accounted for sales through December 31, it may have surpassed the Wii U already. There is no doubt that it will eclipse the sales numbers of the Wii U; the only question is when.

The Nintendo Wii U was a colossal failure for Nintendo, especially considering they were coming off of the success of the Wii. Despite this though, they’ve been able to bounce back with the Nintendo Switch, which has sold just under 80 million units worldwide in less than four years, including Switch Lite sales. The sales of the Nintendo Switch lite are astonishing though. I could never own one, as I play docked 99% of the time, but a huge appeal of the Nintendo Switch is its handheld mode, so it’s no surprise the Switch Lite is doing so well. It’s just, well, no one expected it to do this well, and this quickly. The Switch Lite is defying all expectations, and if Nintendo does decide to come out with a Switch Pro model, that would thirst the appetite of players who prefer to play the system as a home console.
