Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the greatest fighting game of our generation, and perhaps of all-time. With its roster having 85 characters from throughout the Nintendo Universe, with some guests along the way, and over 100 stages, it’s massive in scale and dwarfs any other fighting game in size and scope. Smash Bros. still has three DLC characters to go. Now, this list is far from comprehensive, as it’s pretty difficult to sift through 85 characters. We see these though as not the most underrated characters in Super Smash Bros., but five underrated characters that we simply cannot overlook.
Zelda
Zelda, on the surface, may not seem like a great character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She’s not that fast and her recovery is not the best. Despite this though, if you’re able to master a few of her special attacks, she’s very proficient and a formidable opponent. Her side B, Din’s Fire, if controlled correctly (and not simply spammed) is a killer move, especially in a four-player game. Nayru’s love is also a very good attack, reflecting projectiles back at enemies. Her up B, Farore’s Love, is the most difficult to master, but if you land a hit with it, it sure packs a punch. Her down B, which is a new attack, is her Phantom attacking, which has a fairly long range, though needs to briefly charge up, which leaves Zelda vulnerable. The key is knowing when to use it. Her smash attacks are fairly powerful, and her normal attacks are more than adequate. It’s not easy being able to master these moves, but once you do, Zelda can be one of the better characters in the game.
Yoshi
Yoshi is a character I always dread going up against. Whenever he puts me in an egg I want to throw my controller at the TV (thank God I’ve grown up; I have a nice TV!) His attacks are adequate and while I don’t see many people use him, he’s a difficult opponent. Regardless of what the tiers or numbers say, Yoshi is a very good character and deserves more respect. He’s vastly underused, but when he is used, watch out: if you’re playing someone who knows what they’re doing, you have to be careful or you’ll end up losing.
Luigi
It seems that Luigi is always in Mario’s shadow, and that includes in Super Smash Bros. Luigi is not merely a clone of Mario and has some unique moves of his own. He’s not the best character, but he’s far from a low-tier character either. You always have to have your guard up while playing against Luigi. The key is knowing how to utilize him, which some players simply do not know how to do. When playing a fully-realized Luigi though, he can be a very difficult matchup.
Shulk
Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the most difficult characters to master in the game. His specials, the Monado arts, are hard to get on-point and takes a lot of practice. When mastered though, Shulk can be a top-tier character. His smash attacks also pack quite a punch with the Monado, and his Monado arts are used to supplement his weapon, for the most part. While he’s not the fastest character in the game, through his Monado Arts, he becomes one of the fastest characters in the game. He’s so dynamic and can come at you from so many difficult angles he’s hard to prepare for. He’s both underused and underrated due to this fact. Shulk has the potential to be one of the best characters in Smash Ultimate, all people have to do is give him a chance.
Ganondorf
Ganondorf is one of the most underrated characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While we may have more Zelda representation than some would like to see, it’s simply a fact that these two are vastly underrated, and Ganondorf takes the cake. He’s not the most powerful character, but his special attacks have a deceivingly long-range, and his smash attacks are brutal. While yes, he’s slow, and yes, his recovery probably isn’t very good, Ganondorf makes up for it with his superior attacks. He’s a very difficult matchup. You could be destroying him, yet the game could change with just one hit. One hit is all it takes. You cannot sleep on him or else you’re in a world of hurt. This is the reason why Ganondorf is probably the most underrated character in Smash Ultimate. It’s also nice to see that he finally gets to use his sword. Ganondorf is an absolute tank and if you’re not careful, he’ll decimate you in one, and if you’re lucky, two attacks, which can completely turn the tide of a match.
Super Smash Bros. is the greatest fighting game of our generation, possibly of all-time. There are over 80 characters to choose from, and it isn’t easy, but these are just five underrated Smash characters. There are a lot more. But these are the ones that stand out the most, although this could change quickly as Nintendo is constantly updating the game. Regardless, players should try for themselves and see who they think are the most underrated Super Smash Bros. characters are. They may be surprised at what they find.
