The Matrix 4 has been announced. Variety, in an exclusive story, confirmed the return of writer/director Lana Wachowski and actors Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss for the fourth Matrix film, who will reprise their roles from the previous films. There are rumors that Laurence Fishburne will be recast as Morpheus with a younger actor, but these rumors, as of now, are unfounded.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”
Lana Wachowski is directing the film while co-writing it with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. It will allegedly enter production in early 2020 with a possible 2021 release date. As of right now, there are no indications that Lilly Wachowski will be involved in the film, but her legacy lives on in the world of The Matrix.
“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” Wachowski said.
The Matrix has never been more relevant than in the current cultural climate, and with Ms. Wachowski at the helm and Keanu returning as Neo, there is no doubt the film will be a smashing success; there’s no way Keanu would sign on otherwise.
