Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are two of most famous and influential characters in television history. Their partnership is the thing of legend and is constantly referenced in pop culture and has even been emulated on other successful television programs. Now that Gillian Anderson has confirmed that this will be her last season on The X-Files, many are left wondering whether or not the series would continue without her. To put it frankly, I don’t think it could, as when Mulder left the show for two seasons the series was never the same. The core of the story has always been about the dynamic between Mulder and Scully, a kind of “man of science, man of faith” theme that is so prevalent in LOST. Chris Carter has a different perspective on the matter, hinting that The X-Files may continue without Scully.
“I don’t know. I think that certainly The X-Files has more life in it, there are more stories to tell, with Gillian or without. I’m sorry to see her go, I’ve never actually considered doing this show without her, so is this the end?
“It’s the end of something, I don’t know if it’s the beginning of something new. But certainly we will have to all put our heads together and figure out where to go from here.“
While there may be more stories to tell, given the lack of quality of the past two seasons, they should have left The X-Files stay dead. The ending was perfect.
