A new study suggests that only six percent of gamers don’t spend money on microtransactions. 69 percent actually said their fine with pouring their money into the scam, while 22 percent said they don’t like it, though it’s not said if this faction actually pays any money into the pay-to-win model, while only six percent say they do not spend any money into the system. These are very surprising numbers.
After the huge uproar over the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 controversy, these findings are surprising. It shows that most people are fine with this absolutely ridiculous model. There is no reason why people should have to “pay-to-win”. While the policy is ridiculed by many, as it should, there are certain countries that are moving to ban the practice entirely, which is just as bad. While the policy is disdained by man, if they want to purchase it that’s their decision. Germany is taking steps to ban the practice in its entirety.
People should be able to choose to be able to purchase features of a game, however horrible the practice is. That’s what free enterprise is all about. Banning the practice will just force developers to find another way to implement it.
There is another side to this though. Games are so expensive to make these days, many developers depend on microtransactions in order to recoup costs. So on one side yes, maybe the practice needs to be implemented differently, but there are always two sides to every story.
