The highly anticipated Shenmue 1 & 2 Remasters finally get a release date. The Microsoft Store accidentally revealed when gamers would be able to play the two games. It will be releasing on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC this August 21.
Gamers that pre-order the upcoming release will receive an exclusive double-sided poster along with a reversible cover. The game is set to only be $29.99, so these extra pack-ins are a nice addition to fans and newcomers alike.
Yu Suzuki’s cult classic series originally released on the Sega Dreamcast in 1999 and 2001, respectively. The original was, for the time, the most expensive video game to develop in history, coming in at an estimated $47 to $70 million. Despite being highly praised by gamers and critics alike, the series was a commercial failure to Sega. This halted production on a third installment. At least it was until Sony’s 2015 E3 conference, also dubbed “The Year of Dreams.”
In 2015, Sony brought out Yu Suzuki to announce that Shenmue 3 was planned, but it could not happen without fan support. Thus, a Kickstarter campaign was the go-to method. An ambitious project, but it gained overwhelming support even breaking records. It reached $1 million in only an hour and 44 minutes. On July 17 the campaign ended at $6.3 million, over double its goal. The game is slated for a 2019 release and will release on PlayStation 4 and PC, no word on Xbox One.
