Aaron Greenberg, who is Microsoft’s head of Xbox games marketing, stated in an interview that this may be the last console generation. With three consoles in the Xbox One family, the original Xbox One, the Xbox One S, and Project Scorpio on the horizon, Microsoft has a number of consoles that will be compatible with all Xbox One games. When asked about whether this will be the last console generation, Greenberg said he thinks so.

” I think it is. … For us, we think the future is without console generations; we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware — we’re making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We’re basically saying, “This isn’t a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.” We think of this as a family of devices.”

Project Scorpio has the potential to change the very fabric of the console market as we know it, not only being a part of the Xbox One “family” but also being the most powerful console ever built. Microsoft is moving more towards a PC approach to gaming, with games being compatible with all three consoles in the “Xbox One Family.” This may force their competitors to follow suit, making this generation the final generation. Whether Project Scorpio is a success or not is still up in the air, but it isn’t stopping Sony from going ahead with the PlayStation Neo.

Only time will tell if Microsoft will revolutionize the gaming console market or fall flat on its head.
