The man behind classics such as Fate/Zero, Madoka Magica, and Psycho Pass, Gen Urobuchi, is helming a Godzilla anime film due out next year. It was just green-lit, with the staff releasing a single image with the number “2017” on it. The Godzilla anime film comes right on the heals of the release of Hideaki Anno’s live-action Godzilla film, which released on July 29. It will be interesting to see how Urobachi handles the historic Japanese franchise, especially considering a live-action film from a famed director was just released. Urobachi is credited with both the film’s scenario and screenplay.

Urobachi is known for the grim nature of his stories, with Fate/Zero, Madoka Magica, and Psycho Pass captivating audiences with their dark twists and turns. Urobachi knows how to play to his audience and even with the recent release of a live-action film, the Godzilla anime film will be very different than Anno’s take on the franchise.

The film is being directed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Shesita of Knights of Sidonia fame and will be animated by Polygon Pictures.
