Nintendo has announced today that a Nintendo Direct is taking place tomorrow, 2/17, at 2pm PT/5pm ET. It will be the first proper Nintendo Direct since the last one in September of 2019 and will be 50 minutes long. Nintendo has said that it will focus on “available games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and games coming to Nintendo Switch in the first half of 2021.” It sounds like Nintendo is finally ready to announce the first portion of their 2021 lineup for the Nintendo Switch, much anticipated by fans and the gaming industry alike. Ironically (or maybe unironically), this is the week of Zelda’s 35th anniversary. The original Legend of Zelda game came out for the Famicon on February 21, 1986, and since the franchise has dominated the video game industry. Will we get news of Breath of the Wild 2 or a Zelda 35th Anniversary Collection? Will there be a Skyward Sword remake? There are also other games that are long overdue for an update. Metroid Prime 4 has been “prime” for an update ever since Retro Studios took over the game, and Bayonetta 3 hasn’t had an update since it was initially announced. There’s so much that Nintendo could announce tomorrow, even a new Pokemon game for its 25th anniversary. This year is the year of Zelda though. Even a new trailer of Breath of the Wild 2 would suffice, but an announcement of a 35th-anniversary collector’s edition would be even better.
