The Nintendo Switch has now outsold the Nintendo 3DS in total sales, according to Nintendo’s latest financial report. The Switch has now sold 79.89 million units worldwide, eclipsing the 3DS, which sold 75.94 units. The Nintendo 3DS went out of production last year and had a run of nine years. The Nintendo Switch has only been out for nearly four years, and has already surpassed that number. The Switch’s sales continue to impress. It has already passed the Wii U, GameCube, N64, Super Nintendo, and original Nintendo (NES) in overall sales. The next on the list is the GameBoy advance, which sold 81.51 million units. It should easily surpass this number this year. If the Nintendo Switch continues at this pace, it could surpass the Nintendo Wii in overall sales, which sold over 100 million units. This is definitely doable. The Switch has become a worldwide phenomenon, and has the advantage of being both a portable and a home console system. It doesn’t have the disadvantage of competing with one of Nintendo’s other systems, such as the DS or 3DS, which is most likely helping it sell so well, though this isn’t the only reason. The Switch has so many high-quality software titles, it’s hard to stay away. With Zelda’s 35th anniversary on the horizon, as well as Breath of the Wild 2, things are about to get even better too.
