Today’s Nintendo Direct focusing on 3DS titles was rife with surprise announcements. Among the surprises as an official announcement for Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, a portable version of the hit Super Mario creation game that released for the Wii U last year. This Super Mario Maker 3DS game will retain most of the original’s tools and features, and players will even be able to enjoy courses made on the Wii U.

In addition to the courses made by others players, Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo 3DS will release with 100 original courses created by Nintendo. And after you’ve had your fill of those courses, you can try out custom courses shared locally via wireless connection or Street Pass. As well, this new 3DS version will let players share incomplete courses with friends so they work on courses together.

Every course part and tool available in the Wii U version will be available in Super Mario Maker 3DS, except for the Mystery Mushrooms and their associated Mario costumes. So while it is unfortunate that the plethora of alternate costumes won’t make the jump to portable, players will still be able to construct courses on the 3DS just like they would on the Wii U. And while Nintendo confirmed that not all courses made on the Wii U will be compatible with Super Mario Maker 3DS, players can enjoy many courses created on the home console.

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS will be released on December 2, 2016.
