San Diego Comic Con 2016 proved to be SEGA’s premiere venue for Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary celebration. Not only did fans get a first look at Sonic’s new 2D adventure in Sonic Mania, but they were given a small taste of the his next tent pole release coming next year. The Project Sonic 2017 teaser trailer sets the stage for the hedgehog’s newest 3D quest and sees the surprise return of a valuable ally.
The new trailer presents Sonic’s world “in the darkest of times” as it lay besieged by giant robots presumably unleashed by Dr. Eggman. The threat appears too great for the Blue Blur alone, but luckily a certain ally springs to his aid. Excitingly, the Project Sonic 2017 teaser trailer marks the return of Classic Sonic, who will partner with Modern Sonic for the first time since 2011’s Sonic Generations.
While the dramatic tone of this pre-rendered trailer does serve to build the epic feel of Project Sonic 2017‘s story, it also unfortunately calls to mind the general tone of 2006’s Sonic the Hedgehog. We can only hope that this new title will be more effective in presenting its world and characters than the hedgehog’s 2006 misstep.
Project Sonic 2017 is developed by Sonic Team and is set for release Holiday 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo NX, and PC. More information will be released later this year.
