Super Mario Odyssey had sold more than two million units in a mere three days, according to its six months financial results briefing. This is quite a feat for the Mario Franchise, considering what some believed to be one of the most disappointing entries in the in Super Mario 3D WorldSuper Mario Odyssey launched with a brand-new console which already had a stellar software lineup. The Nintendo Switch is a phenomenon. These sales are unprecedented and propels Super Mario Odyssey as the best Mario game of all-time, surpassing masterpieces such as the Mario Galaxy games.

While sales are not necessarily indicative of quality, both Zelda and Mario for the Nintendo Switch have both sold incredibly well and are regarded as two of the greatest games of all-time. Which one will come on top for GOTY? This will be a hard-fought battle, but both deserve it. Breath of the Wild may be at a disadvantage simply because it came out so early in the year, but the story DLC, Champion’s Ballad, may catapult it ahead of Super Mario Odyssey down the stretch. The main question begins is when will the DLC for Breath of the Wild come out?

Regardless. This has been an extraordinary year for Nintendo.
