Octopath Traveler has reached the 2.5 million sales milestone, the game’s official Twitter account announced. This accounts for both physical and digital sales. The game came out in July of 2018 and is best known for its difficulty, excellent story, memorable characters, and its 2D high-definition graphics. It’s an old-school RPG, much harder than the majority of 3D games, but adds something new to the table, which is what makes a great game. Octopath Traveler has sold more than Xenoblade Chronicles 2 by about 500,000 units, for reference.

With Bravely Default II coming out in a few days and Project Triangle Strategy coming to Switch next year, Nintendo’s milestone console is littered with high-quality RPGs. Many of those, like Octopath and the aforementioned games, are from Square Enix, who has put a lot of excellent games onto the Nintendo Switch. Project Triangle Strategy looks increasingly interesting and was announced last week during the latest Nintendo Direct. There is currently a playable demo on the eShop, and we will get a preview out soon, but it appears to be, at least graphically, a spiritual successor to Octopath Traveler, for the moment. With such excellent sales though, Octopath Traveler warrants a sequel in its own right, which will hopefully come in the next few years. Needless to say, Square Enix’s development team on the Nintendo Switch is excellent.
