Famitsu has released their sales numbers from January 11 through January 17 and once again, the Nintendo Switch dominates. Of the top 10 in software sales, the Switch takes every single spot. This is astounding. In terms of hardware sales, the Switch combines for almost 170,000 units, while the PlayStation 5 sold just under 10,000 units with the PlayStation 4 trailing behind with 6,800 units. The PlayStation 5 digital edition sold roughly 1,200 units, bringing the PlayStation 5 sales to about 11,000 units. The fascinating thing about the software sales are that so many of the Nintendo Switch games on the list have been out for years. Aside from Animal Crossing, which is a worldwide phenomenon, Mario Kart 8 DeluxeSuper Smash Bros. UltimateSplatoon 2Super Mario Party, and Pokemon Sword/Shield are all in the top 10. These games are well over a year old, the majority older. Here are the sales numbers.

This is just one week in January but shows a trend. The Nintendo Switch is dominating Japan, and older games are still finding their place on the sales charts. Famitsu’s January 11 through January 17 sales numbers show one thing: the Nintendo Switch has overtaken the Japanese market and it will be difficult for any other console to take its place, even the PlayStation 5.
