Another week, another set of sales figures from the Japanese market courtesy of Famitsu. This week comes the Famitsu sales figures through the week of March 14. The Nintendo Switch continues to dominate the Japanese market, selling roughly 70,000 combined units compared to the PlayStation 5’s approximate 36,000 units. Some of this may be due to Sony supply issues, but still, it’s quite a feat for Nintendo, as they have been dominating their competition week in and week out. Last week’s sales numbers were even more lopsided, with the Switch selling roughly 90,000 units compared to the PlayStation 5’s mere 22,000 units. The differential varies from week-to-week, but the Switch is obliterating their competition in the market that matters to them most: Japan. Here are the hardware sales numbers from Famitsu through the week of March 14.

Switch – 38,951
Switch Lite – 33,659
PS5 – 31,878
PS5 Digital Edition – 5,973
PS4 – 2,908
New 2DS LL – 872
Xbox Series X – 650
Xbox Series S – 68
PS4 Pro – 13

On the software side, the numbers are even more lopsided. The Switch has taken the top 10 spots in sales, which is becoming, or has become, a recurrent theme over the last few months. The games are a mix of old and new, as new games are beginning to come out and 2021 is beginning to take shape. Still, Nintendo’s strategy of getting Switch owners to buy older games as well is holding steadfast. Here are the software numbers.

1. [NSW] Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury – 41,734 / 518,121
2. [NSW] Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! – 25,287 / 2,031,842

10. [NSW] Minecraft – 8,690 / 1,852,323

As 2021 has just gotten started, we cannot wait to see what this year has in store moving forward, especially when it comes to the Japanese market!
