A brand new update is coming to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in March, and it will be Mario-themed. This came by way of a Tweet by Nintendo of America, but was initially announced last September during the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct. As Super Mario Bros. 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is coming out this month, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars will not be sold after the month of March (online or at retailers), this update would wrap up the celebration of Mario’s 35th anniversary. In a way, an Animal CrossingNew Horizons update is the perfect way to wrap the celebration up. The latest Animal Crossing is second all-time in sales on the Nintendo Switch, selling over 30 million copies. The Nintendo Switch, along with its software, particularly Animal Crossing, has been wildly successful and is the perfect avenue to celebrate the Mario franchise.

If they’re doing all of this just for Mario, the anniversaries of Pokemon and Zelda (their 25th and 35th anniversaries, respectively) bode well. Rumors have it that Nintendo will come out with a 3D remake of Diamond and Pearl for the Switch, and there have been rumblings for months now that there will be an Ocarina of Time HD release. If Mario is getting some special in-game goodies in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it shouldn’t be long before Zelda and Pokemon get the same treatment to celebrate their anniversaries this year.
