The much-anticipated final installment of the Evangelion Rebuild, 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, has been delayed once again indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was originally supposed to be released on January 23 after an original release date in June. The film is all but finished, but due to the continued spread of the virus in both Japan and worldwide, Kara has decided to delay the film once again. While this is unfortunate, there’s simply no going around it; films and videogames worldwide are being delayed due to the pandemic. The frustrating thing for fans is that the last film was released nine years ago, in 2012. Evangelion is a cultural phenomenon, both in the United States and Japan. I witnessed this myself at Anime Expo where I was able to watch all three films on the big screen, including the first 15 or so minutes of Thrice Upon a Time. It enthralled me. While I wish that Thrice Upon a Time was coming out in the coming weeks, I can understand the delay, and I cannot wait to see the end of Shinji’s journey, after all these years. The Evangelion Rebuild films began in 2007. This is a 14+ year journey. And from everything I can tell, it will be worth the wait, as frustrating as it is.
