I’ve been playing Breath of the Wild and I can only find one word to encapsulate my experience – boring. While the game itself is superb, it leaves a lot to be desired. The open-world is sometimes too open, and the lack of a cohesive narrative leaves a lot to be desired. These are problems that Breath of the Wild 2 seem to promise to rectify, if the trailer is anything to go on. Ganondorf is back in a much-awaited return. Ganondorf hasn’t been seen since 2006’s Twilight Princess. It is a much-needed return at that. While Breath of the Wild used Ganon as its villain, it was merely a mindless beast, lacking the cunning and cruel nature of one of Nintendo’s greatest villains of all-time. This is just one of the reasons that Breath of the Wild 2 has the potential, and will be, to be the best Zelda game.
With a cohesive narrative Breath of the Wild 2 is poised to surpass Breath of the Wild on that fact alone. They don’t need to throw traditional items in, but just enough familiarity in order to please fans of Breath of the Wild’s and fans of previous Zelda titles. Traditional dungeons are a must. If Breath of the Wild 2 is to be the best Zelda game it must have traditional dungeons, as the trailer has already hinted at. It seems as if Zelda is going to be heavily involved in the narrative, which is a good thing. Zelda and Link make a fantastic pair, and if she is his companion in the game that will make things even better. Ocarina of Time was one of the best games of all-time because of Ganondorf. He drove the story forward. Breath of the Wild was somewhat lackluster because it lacked this same drive. It lacked a narrative that pushed forward. Because of this, it’s not one of the elite Zelda games. Breath of the Wild 2 has the chance to surpass it, if done right.
Bring back some form traditional items, bring back Ganondorf (which is all but confirmed), and bring back traditional dungeons and Breath of the Wild 2 will be the best Zelda game of all-time, even surpassing Ocarina of Time. It’s that simple. This is what fans have been wanting since 1998. Breath of the Wild set all the groundwork in terms of an open-world and such that Breath of the Wild 2 can build on. While the former lacked any type of story, judging from Breath of the Wild 2’s trailer, it will be narrative-driven. There is a hint that dungeons will be back, but in what capacity, we do not know. Items are an unknown.
Despite all of this though, Breath of the Wild 2 appears to be the game that Zelda fans have been waiting for, and the return of Ganondorf is a well-deserved, though unexpected, treat.
