Konami’s latest release, Metal Gear Survive, is being slammed for its use of microtransactions. The game offers a micro-currency titled SV Coins. These coins can only be purchased using real-world money. SV Coins are only sold in batches and, as of writing this, cannot be earned through gameplay. If the player already has begun playing the game but wishes for a new character slot for whatever reason, they are prompted with an option to pay 1,000 SV Coins. However, the only way to unlock that many coins is to spend $9.99 for a set of 1,150.
Konami has already been met with harsh criticism over its handling of Metal Gear Solid V and series creator, Hideo Kojima. Twitter user, Michael Yurko, has discovered that the developers of the game have not forgotten Hideo Kojima. It would appear that they have left an apparent easter egg which says “KJP FOREVER”. This is an obvious callback to Kojima Productions that has been left in the game.
The two’s feud was made public once Geoff Keighley, the host of The Game Awards, shared in a speech during the 2015 ceremony, that Konami had barred Kojima from accepting any awards for Metal Gear Solid V. It will be interesting to see how Konami responds to this easter egg due to the two’s complicated history with one another.
