The Pokemon series is riddled with starters spanning VI generations (soon to be VII). With Pokemon being the talk of the town with the release of Pokemon GO, we decided to take a look at some of the best starters and compiled a list of the top 5 starters from the series. While there are so many to choose from, some are bound to miss the cut, but here is our list of the top 5 Pokemon starters.
Top 5 Pokemon Starters — 5. Piplup
The Sinnoh region has some fantastic starters to choose from, but let’s be completely honest — how cute is Piplup? A water-type penguin, Piplup is adorable and eventually evolves into a full-fledged Penguin, Empoleon, who is a Water/Steel type. This becomes very useful and because of Piplup’s adorable nature and evolutionary track, it makes our top 5 Pokemon starters list.
Top 5 Pokemon Starters — 4. Torchic
Torchic hails from the Hoenn region and was the first starter I picked in Pokemon Sapphire. While it’s not very menacing at first glance, it eventually evolves into Blaziken, who is a fire/fighting type Pokemon and very powerful. Torchic has its own charm as well. It is a small chic-like Pokemon and is incredibly cute. Fire or water-type Pokemon are the most useful, and Torchic’s evolutionary path, especially with its evolutionary path, makes it extremely formidable.
Top 5 Pokemon Starters — 3. Charmander
Charmander is both lovable and cute. Although he’s all but useless at the first gym, he’s a classic. His ultimate evolution, Charizard, is a total badass and one of the most popular Pokemon in the series up until this day. The first-generation starters are still beloved in the hearts of fans and Charmander may be most of all.
Top 5 Pokemon Starters — 2. Squirtle
Squirtle was my first Pokemon starter when I played Pokemon Blue, which may be one of the reasons why he is so high on our top 5 Pokemon starters list. This is not the only reason though. He is a turtle (which is an awesome animal by the way), useful against various Kanto Region gyms, and his final evolution Blastoise is extremely strong. He may not have the same kind of popularity as Charmander, but water-type Pokemon trumps fire types every time.
Top 5 Pokemon Starters — 1. Pikachu
Pikachu is the default starter in Pokemon Yellow and up until that game, he was one of the most coveted Pokemon in Blue and Red. Having a Pikachu was like having a badge of honor. He is the face of Pokemon. He has a cute factor and charm unlike any other Pokemon and while he may not be as strong in his evolutionary track as some of the other Pokemon on our list, it doesn’t matter. Pikachu is adorable, endearing, and the best Pokemon to ever grace the series.
