One year ago today the Nintendo Switch was announced. What a difference a year makes! When the portable/console hybrid was unveiled, it was met with a lot of healthy skepticism. While the initial Nintendo promo was great, people needed to see results. Many viewed the Switch as merely a Zelda machine, even up until launch.

Oh, how wrong they were, as the latest Nintendo Direct shows.

Now, a year later, Nintendo is accounting for two-thirds of all video game hardware sales. The Switch is a massive success and it’s only been out for roughly seven months. It hasn’t even seen its first holiday season. There have been so many great games that have come out for it already, with Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Ultra Street Fighter II, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Sonic Mania, and so much more on its way.

The Switch was formally introduced into the world one year ago today, but its identity didn’t take shape until after the release of such games as Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It’s the portability and social aspect of the system that makes it so great, and that’s what this initial promo showed us.

So today we should celebrate the Nintendo Switch, in all its glory. The best is yet to come.

  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Fire Emblem Warriors
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • LA Noire
  • Snipperclips Plus: Cut it Out, Together!
  • Morphies Law
  • Arena of Valor – Nintendo Switch MOBA
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • DOOM
  • Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
  • Flip Wars
  • Arcade Archives Mario Bros.
  • Project Octopath Traveler (Working Title)
  • Dragon Quest Builders
  • Kirby Star Allies
  • Lost Sphere
  • Sonic Forces
  • Resident Evil

These are all the games that have been announced that are coming out for the Switch either by the end of this year or early next year. For Nintendo fans, retribution is sweet, as the Switch has more than made up for the failings of the Wii U in just a few short months.

One year ago the phenomenon now known as the “Nintendo Switch” began. A year later, it’s still going as strong as ever.
