Today during The Pokemon Company’s “Pokemon Presents”, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were announced. These two titles are remakes of the DS games Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. They have a similar top-down perspective, but made in high definition and have a chibi-like artstyle. They are faithful recreations of the original games, which are two of the best Pokemon games of all-time. The titles are not being developed by Game Freak, but rather ICLA. It’s being co-directed by Yuichi Ueda and Junichi Masuda, the director of the original Diamond and Pearl games. Some may be disappointed that it doesn’t seem like a full-blown remake, but the Sinnoh region is one of the most beloved in the Pokemon series. Diamond and Pearl are also significant because they thrusted Pokemon into the modern era on the Nintendo DS. This is a part of The Pokemon Company’s celebration of the 25th anniversary of the series, and the pair of games will launch late 2021 on the Nintendo Switch. It’s also the 15th anniversary of the original games, which were released in 2006. The chibi artstyle works, the battle animations seem to be based on Pokemon Sword and Shield, and Pokemon fans will eat it up, no matter what the naysayers say. It was yet another solid showing from Nintendo, and if these two presentations are any indication, 2021 will be another monster year from the company.
