Nintendo has dominated the gaming industry in Japan in the month of January in software and hardware sales and as a publisher. Nintendo has sold the top five games in Japan in Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban; Ring Fit Adventure; Animal Crossing: New Horizons; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe; and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It’s incredibly surprising that the top five games sold in Japan are all games (maybe save one or two) that have been out for well over a year. These aren’t new games, and show the longevity of Nintendo’s software on the Switch. Nintendo is also the top publisher in Japan, overtaking Konami and The Pokemon Company. Last but not least, the Switch is also atop hardware sales, selling over one million units combined.

With 2021 beginning to heat up, will Nintendo keep this insurmountable lead or will they be overtaken by a company like Sony? It’s hard to tell at this point, but it will be interesting to see what Nintendo’s 2021 lineup will be once it is announced.
