Shidou Nakamura, who played the Shinigami Ryuk in the original Death Note films as well as the anime, is set to reprise his role in the 2016 film. The 2016 Death Note film takes place after the originals in which the DNA of Light and L were inherited by two individuals in a highly advanced technological society plagued by terrorism. These two will wage war to attain six Death Notes that are scattered across the Earth. The film will presumably contain the same recurring themes of both the films and the TV series.

Death Note (2016) will open in Japanese theaters on October 29 of this year.
