The Japanese publication Famitsu has released video game sales in Japan for both consoles and software titles. The Nintendo Switch, and by turn, the Switch Lite, reign supreme, selling a combined 160,000 units over the course of this one week. The second-highest selling console? The PlayStation 5, with a measly 10,000 units (roughly). That means that the Nintendo Switch is outselling the PlayStation 5 by 16 times the amount, or beating it by 1,600% (if my math is correct.) That is enormous and unprecedented. The PlayStation 4 doesn’t trail the PlayStation 5 by much either. Here is the list in full.

  • Switch – 134,102
  • Switch Lite – 33,494
  • PS5 – 9,921
  • PS4 – 6,802
  • PS5 Digital Edition – 1,243
  • New 2DS LL – 551
  • Xbox Series X – 63
  • Xbox Series S – 46
  • PS4 Pro – 18

On the software side of things, Nintendo obliterated its competition, taking all top 10 spots for the best-selling games in Japan during the week of January 4. Animal Crossing is still going strong at number two, as well as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at four, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finding itself at the number five spot. Splatoon 2 also makes its way onto the chart, placing at number nine, and Super Mario Party at number 10. Besides Animal Crossing, which is a cultural phenomenon, all of these games are years old, which makes the Japanese software sales chart all the more interesting.

Nothing has been more clear: Nintendo needs to capitalize on Sony and Microsoft’s temporary weakness and bring out their best content this year. With Zelda’s 35th Anniversary coming up and Pokemon’s 25th, they are sure to have a slew of titles in the waiting to make this a truly special year.
