Death Stranding is a single-player action game exclusive to the PlayStation 4. Kojima has stated that the game focuses on a connection between life and death, as eluded to by its name. The name references a phenomenon where whales/dolphins often strand themselves on a beach and die as a result. Because of this, when the main player dies he is sent to an alternate “upside-down” world submerged in water where their actions here carry into the world of the living. On top of all this, the cast of the game is star-studded featuring the likes of Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Troy Baker, and Guillermo Del Toro.
This is Hideo Kojima’s first release since his fallout from Konami, where the two had complications over Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Their 30-year relationship ended due to a power struggle after company restructuring. This resulted in Kojima’s name and his production company being removed from The Phantom Pain and its prequel Ground Zeroes. One other casualty was the cancellation of an upcoming Silent Hills game after it was revealed by an acclaimed playable teaser, P.T. These influenced Kojima into forming his own studio separate from Konami and was later acquired by Sony.
