Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa has only been on the job a week, but he’s moving full steam ahead. In an interview with Kyoto Shimbun, Furukawa stated he would like to see a successor to the 3DS. Given the popularity of the Nintendo handheld, this isn’t a bad move for those who are dedicated to their 3DS’s. On the other hand, it could be disastrous and cut into Nintendo Switch sales. Furukawa is a great new face for Nintendo though and a 3DS successor could be a huge success, considering how successful the 3DS is and its superb lineup of games.

According to translations, Furukawa had this to say:

Mr Furukawa is of the belief the device still has advantages over the Switch and stated Nintendo was “considering various possibilities” in regards to a successor for the popular handheld device.

What advantages it has over the Nintendo Switch is unclear, and how serious he is about a 3DS successor is not clear either. Personally, I would love to see a Link Between Worlds sequel, or a remake of Link’s AwakeningA Link Between Worlds is the ultimate puzzle game and 3D is almost required because of the nature of its’ verticle puzzles. A successor to the 3DS would be wonderful, but one question remains.

Will it cut into Nintendo Switch sales?
