The Nintendo Switch continues to astound. The system has now surpassed four million sales in Japan in a mere 13 months, and this is despite constant shortages, according to the latest Media Create numbers. If you want to be more precise, the Switch has sold 4,036,797 units as of April 8. Again, this was achieved in just 13 months.

Now, let’s look at Nintendo’s closest competitor in Japan, the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 has sold  6,626,656 units in 38 months. Now, let’s put this in perspective. The Nintendo Switch has sold an average of roughly 308,000 units per month. On the other hand, the PlayStation 4 has sold an average of 174,000 units per month. This means that the Nintendo Switch is actually outpacing the PlayStation 4 in sales, in Japan at least.

It’s yet to be seen whether or not the Switch will catch up to the PlayStation 4 (in Japan) before the inevitable PlayStation 5 is released, as rumors swirl. That’s insignificant at this point though. Nintendo has proven that power doesn’t matter. The Switch will continue to be a raging success, and with the content lineup that Nintendo has for this year and beyond, their market share will only continue to thrive, in Japan and beyond.

These sales numbers are astonishing, especially given the fact that the Wii U, the Switch’s predecessor, was a commercial failure. Nintendo clearly knows what they are doing and the best is yet to come, especially with the Electronic Entertainment Expo on the horizon in just two months.

Nintendo is sure to have some surprises, as always, up their sleeves.
