Nintendo definitely demonstrated their continued confidence in the 3DS system by announcing several new games during today’s Nintendo Direct. One of these surprise announcements was for a new side-scrolling Pikmin game headed to the 3DS next year. Demonstrating an interesting new approach for the series, the Pikmin 3DS announcement trailer shows how the new game blends platforming, puzzle-solving, and classic Pikmin gameplay.

While looking very different from other games in the series, this new Pikmin 3DS title aims to apply the series’ unit management and strategy elements to a completely different genre. In what looks like an interesting combination of Yoshi’s Island and Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games, this new 3DS title will hopefully offer satisfying reflex-based challenges and puzzle-solving within the unique world of Pikmin. Despite a change in direction, the trailer shows how Pikmin 3DS is looking to maintain familiar elements from the series’ past, such as treasure hunting and different Pikmin types. As we’ve seen with recent Nintendo games that wandered too far their series’ roots like Metroid Prime: Federation Force, this new Pikmin will definitely need to maintain that balance of new gameplay ideas and those familiar elements.

The new Pikmin game is scheduled for release in 2017 for Nintendo 3DS.
