The Wii was host to a massive library of games which was filled with heavy hitting first-party entries to small indie developed titles. As the Nintendo Switch continues to hit its stride and surrounding itself with high-quality titles, there are still some games that could find themselves ending up on the system. Some Wii games have already found new homes on the Switch but there are still plenty that would receive a warm welcome onto the hybrid console. With an already established track record of quality ports and motion controls, the Switch would be an excellent for some of the following titles:
Super Mario Galaxy 2
First up on this list is one that has been mentioned much more frequently due to the Super Mario 3D Collection. It’s often regarded as one of the best games to come out on the Wii and one of the best Mario games period. This is a title that is highly requested and would be a huge welcome to the Switch’s library. With so many games from the Super Mario franchise coming over, there is no reason this shouldn’t. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a title that could boast high sales numbers for Nintendo. Not to mention, the framework is already there with its predecessor receiving the port treatment.
Dead Space Extraction
EA and Nintendo have not had the most luxurious partnership on the Switch with the biggest support coming from rehashed Fifa entries, Need for Speed ports and the lovable indie game, Fe. EA also doesn’t have the best track record with supporting older IPs. What better way to bring an old catalog to the forefront and strengthen relations with Nintendo than Dead Space Extraction? Well, ya, there are plenty of other choices but this entry is one that is incredibly unique and played very well on the Wii. An on-rails shooter and motion control would be something that could do great on the system. Not to mention, it’s also from a newly dormant franchise that may just help revive it. It may not be a main entry, but it’s fun and could lead to a potentially similar HD trilogy remake that Mass Effect is receiving.
Disney’s Epic Mickey Collection
If you were a kid and owned the Wii, there’s a good chance you at least tried Disney’s Epic Mickey. It’s a fun game where you explored as Mickey Mouse and his pal, Oswald the Rabbit, and traveled throughout various stages. The overall goal was to stop a sinister foe and bring color to a world heavily inspired by the Magic Kingdom. It was a title filled with heart and character that deserves a second chance at life. Combining the first and second entries could create a collection of sorts to bring it back to the forefront. Shoot, maybe even throw in Epic Mickey: Castle of Illusion from the 3DS and you could have yourself a winner. This is a series that may not have had its best share of being in the spotlight and could use another go. It would be fantastic to have this on the Switch and would reach a large audience looking for something Disney related.
House of the Dead: Overkill
The Wii had a slew of games that were able to use motion controls to their advantage. One series that really capitalized on this feature was Sega’s The House of the Dead. Now, the franchise had used motion controls in arcades and through light guns for previous consoles but not like what the Wii provided. Its controls had much more fidelity to it and truly felt like a home version of the arcade iterations. The Switch is definitely able to help replicate the feeling and also to bring this series back onto people’s minds. Sega and Nintendo have a great relationship already with ports and new entries coming into the ecosystem of the big N. This would be a solid release and could help provide an underappreciated genre into the limelight.
Skyward Sword
What list would this be without mentioning The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword? An obvious candidate for a must port that needs no further introduction. This is one of the best games on the Wii and a title that has barely received any sort of love from Nintendo. The Legend of Zelda mainline games have seen themselves ported over to newer systems and Skyward Sword has yet to see this. So far, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess have been ported to a newer generation, why not this one? It’s only a matter of time until this title finds its way onto newer hardware and with a more favorable control scheme. For now, though, all we can do is wait and hope.
Some publishers have the potential to greatly capitalize on the Switch’s success, which many already have. These games showcase that there is at least some demand and that they could see a boost in popularity should these games find themselves on the handheld system. Granted, a few of these are pipe dreams but they would be welcome and contribute to revitalizing a couple popular series. The Switch has proven that many titles can find success even for older entries so maybe these pipe dreams might actually become reality one day.
