Spoilers for Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War to follow
Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, has revealed the gut-wrenching final line of one of the most beloved Guardians. At the end of the film, Thanos has attained all six infinity stones to complete his gauntlet and wipe out half of all life in the universe. One character that was seemingly killed off was Groot. Before he begins his transformation into ash, he utters his famous line, “I am Groot.”
As we all know, Groot’s only line of dialogue carries many meanings. Only the Guardians, and now Thor, are able to understand Groot. None of the other characters translate the meaning, but James Gunn has. The final line in English means “dad.” This is in direct reference to Gunn previously clarifying that the Groot in this film is the original Guardian’s son after Groot died in the first Guardians of the Galaxy.

There is no doubt that Marvel’s Infinity War sent many into a sense of shock. Many series mainstays were disintegrated, leaving only the original Avengers crew and Rocket Racoon. Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and most of the Guardians of the Galaxy vanished. Only time will tell when and how these characters will return, as many of them have confirmed upcoming films, such as Black Panther, Spider-Man, and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Avengers: Infinity War pulled off numerous record-breaking feats. It’s the fastest movie ever to earn over $1 billion, had the most pre-sale tickets ever sold, attained the highest domestic box office opening ever, and had the highest worldwide opening weekend ever. This is without the help of the Chinese market, where the heroes are expected to perform extremely well.
Fans don’t have to wait much longer for the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Marvel’s next film, Ant-Man and the Wasp, is set to release in theatres on July 6.
