The Nintendo Switch has pulled off an amazing feat. In just one year, it has become the fastest-selling console over a 12 month period in United States history, outpacing juggernauts such as the PlayStation 4 and the Wii, according to NPD numbers. While this is a historic accomplishment, it’s not much of a surprise. The console launched with a brand new Legend of Zelda game, had a steady release of first-party software through the end of 2017, and in addition to Zelda also released a brand new Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey. The system also had stellar third-party support and had an incredible lineup of “Nindies” on their Nintendo eShop.
Portability was also a major factor in the success of the system, as players could play legitimate console games on the go in high quality. There’s also a social aspect of the console which is unparalleled, as instead of LAN parties, people can now have Nintendo Switch parties with games like Splatoon 2 and 1-2 Switch, to name just a few. The Switch is the most innovative system to come out in years and is re-invigorating gaming as we know it. Nintendo may or may not keep up the pace, but with Super Smash Bros. Switch coming out this year, things are about to get crazy. Especially if Pokemon is released as well.
While the abundance of ports all at once, and a few mediocre ones at that, is somewhat frustrating, Super Smash Bros. is one of, if not the most anticipated game for the Nintendo Switch. Gamers have wanted it from day one. We don’t know yet if it’s a brand new game or some kind of port-hybrid, but regardless, as long as most of the character lineup is the same, gamers won’t care. I just want to use my 40 Smash amiibo.
