At E3 2021, Nintendo showed off the latest trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (temporary name.) It was stunning, and while still cryptic, showed off some of the game’s key features that will be prevalent throughout the game. It also showed why Skyward Sword HD is being remade before the release of Breath of the Wild 2, as we return to the Sky! There were also new enemies shown. When Breath of the Wild 2 was first shown, I thought it would be releasing in 2021 at the latest because they would be re-using assets from the first game with the same map, only adding multiple landmarks. I was severely misguided and underestimated Nintendo. While Breath of the Wild 2’s release in 2022 is disappointing, there’s still a lot of Zelda coming. Breath of the Wild 2 is more than we could have possibly imagined, and then some. This comes from Nintendo directly.
“The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: A new teaser for the upcoming Nintendo Switch game showed off gameplay, as well as a vast new world high above the kingdom of Hyrule. The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is aiming to launch for Nintendo Switch in 2022. More information about the game will be revealed in the future.“
Granted, this is very sparse, but re-iterates we are returning to the Sky from Skyward Sword. Can anyone say Skyloft? The fact that Breath of the Wild 2 will not just feature the return of Ganondorf, shown in the trailer once again, but the Sky, shows its direct connection to the two most important games in the franchise: the story which started it all, Skyward Sword, and the title which is arguably the best game in Zelda history, Ocarina of Time. It’s a very exciting time to be a Zelda and Nintendo fan.
Breath of the Wild 2 is aiming for a 2022 release date, which it will hopefully make. It has the potential to cement itself as the greatest game in video game history.
