David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the duo responsible for HBO’s smashing success Game of Thrones, have been tapped to write a series of Star Wars films. Yes, Benioff and Weiss are going straight from Winterfell to “A Galaxy Far, Far Away”. They will begin their duties after Game of Thrones wraps up, which is due to air in April 2019. Their films will be separate from the Skywalker saga and Rian Johnson’s newly-announced trilogy. Kathleen Kennedy had nothing but great things to say about two of the most prolific writers in television.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today.
“Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss also issued a statement.
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since.
“We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
Going from Game of Thrones to Star Wars is a huge tone shift, but given the fact that Star Wars is looking to break from the past and pave new ground, this could end up being an excellent move. Many will go see the films just because David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s names are attached. This could be the beginning of a brand new type of Star Wars that we’ve never seen before. It’s very refreshing news, as Benioff and Weiss are two of the best storytellers in the entertainment industry.
