Bethesda and ID Software confirmed yesterday that their much-anticipated Doom Eternal has been delayed until March 2020. This will undoubtedly disappoint fans, who were looking forward to the latest installment in the Doom franchise, but Bethesda is making the move in order to polish the game and make it the best it can be. The game will now release on March 20, 2020.

To make sure we’re delivering the best experience — for DOOM Eternal to live up to our standards of speed and polish — we’ve made the decision to extend our launch date by a few months to March 20, 2020. We know many fans will be disappointed by this delay, but we are confident that DOOM Eternal will deliver a gaming experience that is worth the wait.

While this is undoubtedly a disappointment, delays are not always a bad thing. Nintendo delays games all the time, and the end result is nothing short of near-perfection. The game is only being delayed four months or so, so it’s not that large of a wait anyhow. By launching in March, DOOM Eternal doesn’t have to compete with Sony juggernauts Death Stranding and The Last of Us Part II. This is a smart business move and ensures DOOM Eternal makes its mark on the world in a proper way.
